The "Bear" Necessities of Life
A big night for the Houston Astros last night, as they beat the Seattle Mariners 7-4 to take the final of a 3 game series. An off day today, and then to Oakland tomorrow to start another 3 game set with the hometown Athletics.
But back to last night's game....
It was a thrilling one that saw the Astros hit .500 (5-for-10) with RISP (runners in scoring position, for those that do not know.) for the first time in a long time. Coming into last night, the team collectively posted a league worse .180 BA with RISP. A performance like last night should certainly boost this number up to a level we are used to seeing the spacemen perform at.
Contributing greatly to last night's performance was none other than your people's champion and mine, Evan Gattis. Here's one video of his first RBI of the night, a sac fly to score Altuve in the 5th inning. Following that, a second video of his two-run RBI double off the center field wall at Safeco Field.
I felt a little bad for Colby in the second video, with that little base running blunder. Nonetheless, it does not take away from the vast offensive production achieved by the team last night. And oh, had Evan's fly ball to center had gone just a few more feet, the Big White Bear would have gotten himself a big grand slam. One worthy of the name I would have dubbed of him "Grand Slam Gatty!"
But I digress, still a great game all around by everyone. To keep things in perspective, and ultimately the haters at bay, I decided to fill you all in on some stats from El Oso Blanco's latest 3 game tear, and compare them to how he was this point last season in the first 12 games:
Batting average in first 12 games: 2016 - .231 BA (as of today 4/28/15)
2015 - .130 BA (as of 4/20/15)
*Sidenote: He did not get to a .231 BA or greater until June 1st of last season. He also had an April average of an abysmal .164 in 2015. (Nearly 70 points lower than he is at right now.) Also, two of these three games were started by right handed pitchers, which is an argument haters try to use to keep him down. Not gonna happen this time!
Batting average thoughout his recent 3 game hit streak: .385 BA (5-for-13) His OPS (on base plus slugging) has also increased from .462 to .579.
